Learn PostHog in 5 minutes.

PostHog records what people do in a product, replays their sessions, and runs experiments, all on the same event data. Your five minutes go to asking one real question and answering it with events and a replay, not a hunch.

Pharos is taking you through this one. Free, and it runs right here. No signup.

Events first, then everything else

Every PostHog feature is a view over the same stream of events: a user did a thing at a time. Get the events right and insights, replays, funnels, and flags all become trustworthy.

Events

The raw material

An event is a named action with properties: who, when, where, and what. Autocapture gets you clicks for free; the events you name yourself are the ones worth analysing.

Insights

Questions over events

Trends, funnels, and retention are saved questions: how many, how many made it through, how many came back. A funnel with three steps answers more than a dashboard of twenty charts.

Replay

Watch the moment

Session replay shows the screen at the moment a funnel step was dropped. Numbers say where; replay says why.

What you will do in the lesson

You answer and try things. Nobody demonstrates at you for five minutes.

  1. Name one event that matters. You pick the action your product exists for and write the event and its properties.
  2. Build a three-step funnel. You chain signup to first action to second visit and read where people leave.
  3. Watch a drop-off. You open a replay for a user who stopped at step two and say, in one sentence, what got in the way.
  4. Ship behind a flag. You gate a change with a feature flag so it reaches ten percent of users first.
  5. Read an experiment honestly. You end with a result that looks positive and decide whether it is real or noise.

Before you start

Is PostHog free?

There is a generous free tier on the cloud product, and the whole thing is open source if you want to host it yourself.

How is this different from Google Analytics?

Google Analytics is built for marketing sites and page views. PostHog is built for products: user-level events, replay, flags, and experiments in one place.

Does it have an MCP or API?

Yes. PostHog exposes an API and an MCP server, so an agent can pull insights or query events directly. The lesson stays in the interface.

What about privacy?

You control what is captured, can mask inputs in replay, and can self-host. Decide the capture rules before the first event, not after.
